Across Pennsylvania, there are hundreds of coal refuse sites, covering 8,500 acres with piles containing the byproduct of decades and decades of coal mining operations. Those piles are made up of waste coal, rock, and shale, among other materials, prone to running off into nearby streams and rivers, creating air pollution and catching fire.
